Blackbaud Inc. and Charleston Battery Team Up

Blackbaud Inc. recently announced their partnership with Charleston, SC’s professional soccer team, the Charleston Battery. Together they will be integrating different philanthropic themes to every home soccer match.
At each of the 13 home matches, Blackbaud and the Battery will feature a nonprofit organization. These game-day features will bring attention to the environment, education and families in need.
Blackbaud is well known within the nonprofit community. They are also known for being the sponsor of the Charleston Battery’s stadium, rightly named Blackbaud Stadium. The stadium is located on Daniel Island, SC and has been home to the Charleston Battery every since its opening in 1999. It is also commonly referred to as Battery Park.
Blackbaud Stadium seats 5,100 people and features various environmentally friendly elements. Much of the stadium has been converted to solar energy through the use of numerous solar panels located at the scoreboard end of the stadium. The panels are said to offset as much as 12 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
The Charleston Battery has an 18-year history of community involvement. To complement the Battery’s community involvement, Blackbaud provides more than 22,000 nonprofits with software and services, enabling them to improve operational efficiency and raise money in support their missions.
The Charleston Battery’s upcoming season is about to begin and the first home game is on March 13.

2010 Family Circle Cup Coming to Daniel Island, SC

We’re just a few months away from one of the most star-studded, exciting events the Charleston, SC area has seen. For the 10th year in a row, the famed Family Circle Cup is coming to Daniel Island, SC!
On April 10-18 at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island, thousands will descend upon the 2010 Family Circle Cup. This year’s event marks the 10th year this tournament has been played in Charleston.
The Family Circle Cup is a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour affiliated professional tennis tournament for women, held every year since 1973.
From its inception in 1973 to 2000, the tournament was held at the Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island with the exception of 1975 and 1976 when it was played on Amelia Island off the coast of Florida. It moved to Charleston in 2001.
The No. 1 ranked women’s tennis player in the world, Serena Williams, has officially entered the tournament. She is joined by former World No. 1, Maria Sharapova; current World No.4, Caroline Wozniacki; World No. 7, Victoria Azarenka; and 18-year-old American standout Melanie Oudin. Many other top players will officially enter the tournament in the coming weeks.
The Family Circle Tennis Center has officially begun its search for volunteers. More than 500 positions that need to be filled in a wide array of areas like: guest services, transportation, ushering, food service and the ticket sales. Family Circle Cup individual session tickets will go on-sale to the public through Ticketmaster on Friday, Jan. 15, and will be available 24 hours a day at Ticketmaster.com. Tickets can also be ordered through Ticketmaster over the phone at 800.745.3000, or at any local Publix location offering Ticketmaster services.

Stingrays Win Again!

The South Carolina Stingrays won another exciting game at home Sunday when they beat the Elmira Jackals 3-1.
In front of a crowd of more than 4,000, the Stingrays won their seventh straight game, improving to 16-6-4 (36 points) on the season. They remain in first place in the ECHL’s South Division.
While their home record is lacking, the Stingrays boast an amazing 11-2-2 record on the road. The victory at the North Charleston Coliseum was the Stingrays’ fifth win in 10 tries this season.
The win followed a 4-3 win against the Jackals on Saturday night. Hopefully, the back-to-back wins at home will increase the Stingrays’ confidence. The next three games for the Stingrays will be at home Dec. 11 to 13 where they will take on the Trenton Devils on Friday and Saturday and the Charlotte Checkers on Sunday.
The Stingrays offer promotions and host exciting events at almost every home game. Ticket prices range from $15 to $21, and you’re sure to have experience an electrifying and action-packed night.

MUSC Receives $29 Million in Funding

The Medical University of South Carolina is receiving a rather large grant from the U.S. government as part of the economic stimulus funding package. The University received nearly $29 million in funding through support by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Officials at MUSC say the funding will have an impact on human clinical trials to improve patient therapies, partnerships with the community, student training and faculty recruitment.
Overall, MUSC officials submitted 300 funding applications, totaling approximately $114 million. The hospital is still awaiting word on $38 million in awards for research infrastructure and another $6.5 million for shared research instrumentation. The medical facility has received the largest number of NIH-ARRA grants of any institution in South Carolina.
Founded in 1824, MUSC is the oldest medical school in the South, operating approximately 650 patient beds. MUSC educates and trains more than 3,000 students and residents in Charleston.

SC Senior Open comes to North Myrtle Beach, then to Daniel Island

The South Carolina Senior Open, one of the top events on the Sunbelt Senior Tour, boasts five days worth of activities beginning TODAY (Sept. 5). The event is being held at Tidewater Golf Club and Plantation in North Myrtle Beach, SC.
The SC Senior Open events include a Golf Fest that was open today and a 9 a.m. Pro-Am on Monday that is still accepting entries.
Female touring professionals Lauren Hunt and Katie Allison will be among the pros giving a free public golf clinic at the Golf Fest at the Tidewater driving range. Others conducting clinics include Glen Davis, Bob Lumpkin and Frank Valzano.
Golf Fest also included a long drive demonstration, music, entertainment, skills contests, refreshments, a silent auction, Miss Myrtle Beach 2009 and a drawing every half hour for lunch for two at the Tidewater Grille.
A 2009 Volvo C30 is a pro-am hole-in-one prize on the 12th hole, and every closest-to-the-hole winner on par-3s received a $300 gift card. A new TaylorMade R-9 driver will be given away, and there will be a raffle drawing for $10,000 at the pro-am awards luncheon. Call Tidewater tournament director Bill Pearson at 843-283-3752 to enter the pro-am.
The tournament has raised more than $100,000 in the past five years for local charities and community projects, and this year benefits the North Strand Helping Hand and the Autism Advocate Foundation.
Volunteers are being sought for the Oct. 19 to 25 Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island, a subset of Charleston, SC. Volunteer coordinator Alexa Devine Harnig said the event is about 200 volunteers shy of the 650 goal.
The top 60 money winners will compete for 25 spots on the 2010 PGA Tour in the Nationwide Tour’s season-ending event.
Over 650 volunteers are needed to staff the event, which will be televised live on Golf Channel. Volunteers ages 12 and up can serve in a wide range of areas, and there are many positions available for those who may not have golf knowledge but want to participate.

Charleston Battery Clinch 2009 Playoff Berth

The Charleston Battery and their fans are excited for the upcoming post season. The Battery has played extremely well this year, attaining 12 wins with just 4 losses and 10 ties. Their record is good enough for third position in the standings, a mere six points behind the first place Portland Timbers.
For the newcomers, the Charleston Battery is an American professional soccer team founded in 1993. The team plays in the USL First Division (USL-1), the second tier of the American Soccer Pyramid.
The team plays its home games at Blackbaud Stadium, located on Daniel Island, SC. The stadium holds 5,100 people and is very ecologically friendly. The next home game for the Battery is this tomorrow, Sept. 6, at Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island. Gates open at 5 p.m. and kick follows at 6 p.m. The Battery will be taking on the Minnesota Thunder, who is currently in 9th position in the standings with a record of 5-12-8.
