MUSC Receives $29 Million in Funding
By Ashley Thiesen Caldwell | November 15, 2009

The Medical University of South Carolina is receiving a rather large grant from the U.S. government as part of the economic stimulus funding package. The University received nearly $29 million in funding through support by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Officials at MUSC say the funding will have an impact on human clinical trials to improve patient therapies, partnerships with the community, student training and faculty recruitment.
Overall, MUSC officials submitted 300 funding applications, totaling approximately $114 million. The hospital is still awaiting word on $38 million in awards for research infrastructure and another $6.5 million for shared research instrumentation. The medical facility has received the largest number of NIH-ARRA grants of any institution in South Carolina.
Founded in 1824, MUSC is the oldest medical school in the South, operating approximately 650 patient beds. MUSC educates and trains more than 3,000 students and residents in Charleston.
