Exciting firsts for Daniel Island, rugby and HDTV
on June 14th, 2009 at 9:37 pmRugby fans unite. USA Rugby announced that the World Cup Qualifier versus Canada will be held at the Blackbaud Stadium in Daniel Island on July 4. Not only will this be the first international rugby match ever held in South Carolina, but it will also be the first US rugby match ever broadcasted live in HD on ESPN.
The International Men’s USA team versus Canada is the first of two IRB Rugby World Cup Qualifier matches the Eagles will play this summer. The second will be held in Canada on July 11. Both teams are trying to qualify for the 2011 World Cup, which will be held in New Zealand.
Blackbaud Stadium is the home of the Charleston Battery, a first division United Soccer League (USL) team. Built in 1999, Blackbaud Stadium is, according to their Web site, said to be “one of the premier professional soccer venues in the US and a prototype for all future soccer-specific stadiums yet to come.”
