Famous Tennis star Serena Williams, who is in Charleston this week for the Family Circle Cup, said Charleston is one of her favorite destinations each season according to an article in the The State.

“We love it here. We have a lot of fans here,” said Williams. She said this week in April is a circled date on the calendar for her and sister Venus, the 2004 tournament champion, who withdrew this year due to injuries.
“It’s really cool here,” Serena said. “The people are so supportive, it makes you wanna come back every year.”

Her first appearance at the Family Circle Tennis Center was in 2002 and she’s only missed the tournament twice since due to injuries. Although she’s been here several times she has yet to win the Daniel Island based tournament.

She spoke highly of the courts on Daniel Island and said that “I have a lot of fun on the clay, and this is a good clay, not too fast, it’s not too slow. You can produce a good speed,” she told reporter AKILAH IMANI NELSON.

Serena is joined in Charleston by 11 other players ranked in the top 20. This is William’s fifth appearance in the Family Circle Cup.
