The state Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism has challenged the South Carolina Tourism Alliance to double the amount of tourists who visit the state. The Alliance is an organization of public and private groups to try and get more tourists to visit South Carolina from other states to help boost the state’s economy.
“This is basically getting the industry excited about helping itself,” Prosser, the PRT director, said. “They need to understand that these are things to work on 365 days a year, not just once a year at the governor’s conference.”

State economists estimated that the tourism industry contributed $16.7 billion to South Carolina’s economy in 2006. In that year the state had 30 million visitors. The alliance is now charged with trying to up the amount of money that comes to the state through tourism to $40 billion within the next twelve years.

According to the Post and Courier “the alliance will be led by 28 directors from across the state, including Helen Hill, executive director of the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Mary Thornley, president of Trident Technical College. It will be chaired by Doug Wendel, former president of Burroughs & Chapin Co. Inc., a Grand Strand real estate development firm.”
