Concert raises school supplies for Charleston County

The 5th annual “Homegrown Concert” brought out a third straight record-breaking attendance of 7,400 people, up from last year’s record of 6,800.

“People always want to know how we can continue to accommodate more and more people each year” said Family Circle Cup Communications Manager Mike Saia. ”

Tailgaters and concertgoers started parking along Seven Farms Drive and in the Family Circle Cup parking lot shortly after noon to start the all-day festivity of eating, drinking and enjoying the last days of summer.

Fans who attended the concert donated enough school supplies to fill three school buses.
The concert kicked off at 8 p.m., with opening act Shawn Mullins taking the stage. Mullins, a native of Georgia, is best known for his 1998 hit song “Lullaby” and a 2006 hit “Beautiful Wreck.”
Hooties concert repetoire included a mix of songs from the various Blowfish albums and were even treated to a cover of the REM song “Religion.” and to the better-known songs “Time”, “Let her Cry”, “Hold My Hand” and “I Go Blind.”

The title of the annual concert “Home Grown” comes from the fact that the four originally met when they were students at the University of South Carolina. Their first album “Cracked Rearview Mirror” sold over 16 million copies in the U.S. alone. The group is currently touring all over the U.S. and traveled back to Charleston to not only entertain the locals, but to raise awareness of and promote a good cause.

Tailgaters and concertgoers started parking along Seven Farms Drive and in the Family Circle Cup parking lot shortly after noon to start the all-day festivity of eating, drinking and enjoying the last days of what we consider to be summer.
“Fans dropped off hundreds of bags of school supplies to be donated to the Charleston County School district,” said Saia, adding, “Enough to fill three entire school buses.”
